Rectal Cancer Treatment

Modern treatment of rectal cancer has advanced considerably, with a strong focus on tailoring care to each individual. I specialise in personalised treatment approaches, using strategies such as total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT), where chemotherapy and radiotherapy are given before surgery to improve outcomes and increase the chance of a good response.

For some patients, this may open the possibility of avoiding surgery altogether through a carefully monitored “watch-and-wait” approach, helping to preserve normal bowel function. However, organ preservation is not suitable for everyone, and treatment decisions are always made on an individual basis, aiming to maximise these opportunities where it is safe and appropriate.

Immunotherapy has also become an important option for certain patients, helping the body’s immune system to fight the cancer and, in some cases, achieve excellent and long-lasting results. Overall, my approach is centred on delivering effective care while minimising side effects and maintaining quality of life.
